Conceptueel denkwerk achter 'DeFryvolle'.

The Illustrator behind DeFryvolle (Engels)

Merten Snijders is a versatile and energetic creative. While growing up he became intrigued by the works of dutch masters like van Gogh, the dusty pictorials packed with inspiration hidden in the attic storage: A curious boy's treasure. The excitement uncovered an early ambition to embark on his own creative trail.
Drawing and painting wasn't always his primary channel of expression, it was ever present, yet the overwhelming digital revolution took most of the attention. It wasn't until 2009, when he moved to a quiet harbour town, that he rediscovered the patience to put mind back on paper, where it belongs.
Presently, at home in small coastal town Bakkum, progressing his craft, and personal artistic projects combined with commissioned client work such as small handdrawn animations, invitations, celebration cards or tailor made drawings and illustration oriented paintings.
His style is detailed and fun, it's far from rock and roll, yet not avoiding the darkness, it's idealistic sure, but that doesn't rule out realistic, he emphasizes care and romantizes the simple life, to put it simply: he likes to advertise patience, and create understandable scenes... Or simply, things people can love.

Artistic case study

Many of the drawings on display are part of a story which Merten Snijders has named 'The Fryble', it's an auto-biographical story with an obvious wink to his alter-ego title DeFryvolle and a certain wellknown other book. Leaving that one unread, 'The Fryble' is Merten's own translation in ink and narrative of arriving to a utopia built in his fantasy through digesting his real world experiences: Carefully destiled from a hodgepodge of cultural and professional influence, driven by the resulting growing morality and desire to bring the trail to the timeless space of a book.

The embodied case study introduces a new element to the previous auto biographical approach. It touches upon bringing non-fictional elements such as clients, friends and relatives into the drawn world of it's creator, each depicted into a space surrounded by elements from their own ambition as the artist mindfully interpreted them. To what degree do peoples struggle for self-fulfillment resonate with each other? Does a positive reflection in the form of a romanticized illustration catalyses the featured persons ambition and confidence? Does being written in 'stone' provide a base for other people to believe in their cause? Interesting questions and an unusual approach to motivate, confront and compliment people with their own talent.

The endeavour of this case proofs not only that patience can grow a pretty decent illustrator, but also the involvement of the artist towards the ambitions of others. Struggling in his own way to share that sense of patience and perseverance, by climbing those 'mountains' portrayed in the same story, in which they themselves, are featured.

A mix of techniques

Merten's favorite drawing tools are a refillable .5mm Pentel, using 2B for shading and HB for lining. In ink that would be Staedtler pen's from 0.05mm to 0.8mm. Since recently he prefers to scan the drawings and color them using Photoshop CC and a Wacom, this unfortunately at the cost of a set of fine watercolors. Speedy and correctable results are something to consider when trying to reach a market that demands more and more perfection.
